May Cause Blindness

One of the most dangerous side effects caused by the use of ReNu with MoistureLoc is the development of a very serious infection of the eye that affects the cornea. This is a fungal infection called Fusarium Keratitis. This condition can cause eye pain, decreased vision, light hypersensitivity and in more serious cases, permanent blindness.

According to data from the Central for Disease Control (CDC) and the FDA, there was an increase in Fungal Keratitis cases while this product was on the market. The CDC stated that of the 30 documented Fusarium Keratitis infection cases, 28 were contact lens wearers and most were using ReNu products.

Testing Methods in Question

Critics of contact lens solution makers have contended that current testing methods are not enough to insure the product’s safety. Researchers at the Center of Mycology found that ReNu with MoistureLoc was unable to resist contamination because the strain of Fusarium responsible for the 2006 outbreak had the ability to form biofilms. Contact lens solution manufactures are not required to test for such microbes. In fact, ReNu with MoistureLoc, along with other contact lens solutions, are tested against a rare type of fungus obtained in the 1970’s from a patient in Nigeria. Critics say this testing has no real-world applicability.
